Description

Named for the tjanting—a copper tool used in batik tulis—this piece translates the behaviour of wax lines into textile form. Strokes taper and swell, pause and pool, creating a design that is measured and intentional.

The central panel is arranged like a botanical sheet, where lilies, irises, ranunculus, snowdrops, and clustered sprigs stand upright in balanced intervals. Each motif is given space, with smaller leaves and filler florals ensuring the field stays orderly and legible when folded. The composition reflects the logic of the tjanting: steady rhythm, controlled spacing, and lines that never wander.

The border is structured with a scalloped band, enclosing a repeat of buds and vine-scrolls. Corners are treated with denser clusters to anchor the rectangle, creating stability across the frame. This ensures the scarf wears as a contained textile, not as a scattered print.

The Dessy palette rests on a soft blush ground, carrying florals in rose, lilac, sage, olive, and cream. The pink base lends warmth and quiet luminosity, while greens and violets bring contrast that remains gentle, never loud.

On Korean chiffon, every petal and vein is sharp against the blush, with crisp definition. On Soof modal, edges soften and colours diffuse into a matte finish, giving the scarf a more archival, textile-like quality.
